Activity

Insecticide
Hexaflumuron is a systemic insecticide active against larvae of Coleoptera, Isoptera and Lepidoptera. It has some contact activity, but ingestion is the most important route for activity. Larvae cease feeding soon after ingesting the compound and subsequently die. Death may not occur for up to six weeks following treatment. It is particularly active against young larvae. Hexaflumuron also has strong ovicidal activity in comparison with other BPUs, due to its ability to penetrate egg shells. This is most noticeable on newly-laid eggs. The product also suppresses fecundity in adult females.

Studies (J. Econ. Entomol., 2000) on the kinetics of uptake, clearance, transfer and metabolism of hexaflumuron in Eastern Subterranean termites (Reticulitermes flavipes) showed the product to have a half-life in the termite of 9 days, with no evidence of metabolism products at 40 days after exposure. Hexaflumuron was efficiently transferred around the colony, from treated to untreated insects, by trophallaxis; this factor, combined with the poor metabolism, resulted in the death of the entire colony under investigation.

Use of Dow's Sentricon monitoring / baiting system allows control of termite colonies containing several million individuals with a dose of hexaflumuron as low as 1 gram. The system can maintain a termite-free zone around homes in the southern US states for several years.
