Molecular weight:287.4. Physical form:Colourless crystals. Melting point:136 °C; Vapour pressure:<1×10-2 mPa (20 °C); Solubility:In water 630 mg/l (25 °C). Not compatible with lime or chlorobenzilate. Soluble in methanol, ethanol. Practically insoluble in most organic solvents. Readily soluble in mineral acids, soluble in hot water and in alcohols: in butane-1,4-diol, n-butanol, cyclohexanol, N-methylpyrrolidone, n-propanol, tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol. Stability:Stable in neutral, and moderately alkaline or acidic media, but the free base is liberated by concentrated alkali.
Toxicology
Oral:Acute oral LD50 for male rats c. 1000 mg/kg. Percutaneous:Acute percutaneous 50 for rabbits >1500 mg/kg, rats >6000 mg/kg. Irritating to skin. Phytotoxicity:Peaches, plums, vines, and raspberries may be injured. Russetting may occur on some varieties of apple (including Golden Delicious).

Bees:Topical LD50 for honeybees >0.011 mg/bee.Birds:Acute oral LD50 for mallard ducks 1142, Japanese quail 788 mg/kg.Fish: LC50 for harlequin fish (48 h) 0.53 mg/l; (96 h) 0.6 mg/l. 
Environmental fate: 
Animals:In rats, 95% of the applied dose is eliminated in urine and faeces within 8 d; c. 74% of excreted material is unchanged dodine; metabolites include creatine and guanidine derivatives.Plant:In plants, dodine is converted to creatine by the action of a methyltransferase and simultaneous oxidative cleavage of the dodecyl moiety.
