Physical Properties
Molecular weight:249.1g/mol; Physical form: Colourless crystals. Melting point:117-119℃; Vapour pressure:Negligible; pKa: 4.8; Solubility: In water 46 mg/l (25℃). Readily soluble in acetone, ethanol, and diethyl ether. Slightly soluble in benzene, toluene, and kerosene. The alkali-metal and amine salts are readily soluble in water.; Stability:Acidic in reaction, and forms water-soluble alkali-metal and amine salts, but hard water precipitates the calcium and magnesium salts. The acid and salts are very stable. The esters are sensitive to acids and alkalis. Very soluble in alcohol, acetone, ether. Slightly in benzene, toluene, kerosene.
Toxicology
Oral: Acute oral LD50 for rats 370-700 mg/kg. Phytotoxicity:Soya beans infested with Phytophthora should not be treated, as injury may occur.
Butoxone* (Rat): Oral LD50 >2000 mg/kg. (Rabbit): Dermal >10,000 mg/kg. Butoxone Ester*: 10,000 mg/kg. Butyrac*: 700 mg/kg
Environmental Profile

Ecotoxicology:
Bees:Not toxic to bees.Fish:LC50(96 h) for rainbow trout c. 4 mg/l (amine salt and esters). See also Statham et al., Toxicol. Appl. Pharmacol., 36, 281.?
Environmental fate:
Soil:In soil, microbial degradation leads to the formation of 2,4-D, which subsequently undergoes further degradation. Half-life in soil <7 d (Weed Res., 1978, 18, 275).Plant:In susceptible plants, rapidly undergoes b-oxidation to 2,4-D, which is then degraded to 2,4-dichlorophenol, followed by ring hydroxylation and ring opening. In tolerant plants, b-oxidation to 2,4-D is very slow.

Transport Information
Signal Word:CAUTION; Hazard Class:III (Slightly hazardous)
