Market Overview
Since permethrin and cypermethrin were developed in 1970s, the pyrethroid insecticides have been widely used year by year and the development of this class of chemistry remained revolutionary on several fronts. Most obvious is the shear leap in efficacy offered by pyrethroids, which reduced application rates by up to 100 fold, while improving safety factors by similar margins.
During the 1980’s, use of pyrethroids grew rapidly year by year, reaching around 20 % of the total insecticide market by 1986. Sales have remained at around 17 % until today, despite many new classes of chemistry and the significant impact of genetically modified crops. Since 2002, with the phasing out of many older chemical groups around the world and growing consumer demand for higher quality good, sales have again grown and are nearly 1.4 billion US$. Sales today are at their highest level in history. And the land area treated with pyrethroid insecticides has varied from between 175 and 245 million hectares from 1996 to 2006.
Mechanisms and usages
The pyrethroids are synthesized derivatives of natural occurring pyrethrins, which are taken from pyrethrum, the oleoresin extract of dried chrystanthemum flowers. The insecticidical properties of pyrethins are derived from ketoalcoholic esters of chrystanthemic and pyrethroic acids. These acids are strongly lipophilic and rapidly penetrate many insects and paralyze their nervous system. Both pyrethrins and synthetic pyrethroids are sold as commercial pesticides used to control pest insects in agriculture, homes, communities, restaurants, hospitals, schools, and as a topical head lice treatment. Various formulations of these pesticides are often combined with other chemicals, known as synergists, to increase potency and persistence in the environment.
The most welcomed pyrethroid in agriculture nowadays is the lambda-cyhalothrin due to its advantages in production processing and efficiency, other most applied pyrethroids are: permethrin, cypermethrin, deltamethrin, esfenvalerate, fenpropathrin, bifenthrin and cyfluthrin.
