Reply Question.

Question:
I live in North Wales and I use at intervals Gallup 360 for weed control. I recently purchased a small parcel of land adjoining my property in order to extend my garden. the land has been heavily grazed by horses for abot 15 years but has not received any treatment such as fertiliser during this time. I need to re-turf this area and it is my intention to treat the area with Gallup 360 before rotavating and working the area prior to turfing. Would it be effective at this time if so how long should I leave the area before starting any work, we have some frost but the area has sunshine mid morning to mid afternoon. Any advice would be appreciated, I have read the instructios that come attached to the 5ltr container.

Answer:
Dear Hefin, from my experience over the last 35 years I can tell you with a high degree of certainty that it is possible to get a good result from glyphosate (Gallup or any of the many Glyphosate formulations) at this time of year, but that the possibility of a poor result is considerably higher than the alternative of waiting for the commencement of spring growth.
If you decide to risk it then use a high concentration rate like the 4L/Ha product in not more than 120L/Ha of water. You could incorporate a "sticker" or rain-proofing agent to keep the product on the leaves and get a prolonged uptake period, or even a surfactant to improve initial uptake and coverage. If there are any perennial grasses like couch, then it is best to wait until you see the first leaf symptoms before starting cultivations.
During periods of active growth its probably OK to cultivate 48 hours after spraying.
This is not a recommendation, and you should always read the label before commencing spraying.
    Hope this helps....

Just why anyone would contemplate using such chemistry at this point, when generations have successfully worked the soil and husbanded the land is beyond me. You will need to cultivate anyway so why not use a little patience and simple common sense before risking the possible poisoning of your land for generations?

Hefin
Unless you are a registered grower and have a spray operator certificate you are breaking the law in using a commercial formulation of glyphosate such as Gallup. Tou should either employ a registered contractor or purchase a home and garden formulation from a garden centre of DIY store
