Activity
Fungicide.Pefurazoate is a seed treatment with preventative and curative activity against ascomycetes, basidiomycetes and deuteromycetes. A high level of seed penetration makes it particularly effective against pathogens in the embryo. The product prevents the formation of germ tubes and hyphae: the level of activity is not affected by temperature. The seeds do not require air drying after application, which can be made by coating, slurry or soaking.

Pefurazoate has good activity against benzimidazole-resistant strains of Fusarium moniliforme (Bakanae disease). The product is non-phytotoxic to rice.

Field trial results were reported in Japan Pesticide Information (1990). Performance against Cochliobolus miyabeanus, Fusarium moniliforme and Pyricularia oryzae was compared with benomyl + thiram.

Environmental Profile
Ecotoxicology:
Bees: LD50 (topical) for honeybees >100µg/bee.Birds:Acute oral LD50 for adult Japanese quail 2380, chicks 4220 mg/ kg.Daphnia: LC50 (6 h) >100 mg/l.Fish: LC50 (48 h) for rainbow trout 4.0, bluegill sunfish 12.0, carp 16.9, killifish 12.0, goldfish 20.0, loach 15.0 mg/l.

Environmental fate:
Animals:Pefurazoate orally administered to rats is rapidly metabolised and most of the metabolites are excreted in the urine and faeces within 24 hours. Pefurazoate is not detected in any organs, tissues, and excretions 1 hour after oral administration.Soil:Pefurazoate incubated at 28 °C in soil under flooded conditions, DT50 7-16 d. In paddy soil under field conditions, pefurazoate is decomposed more rapidly, DT50 <2 d.Plant:Neither pefurazoate nor its metabolites were detected in the grain and straw of rice plants derived from treated seeds. Pefurazoate absorbed into rice seeds is also rapidly metabolised and not detected in the roots and shoots of young seedlings (Jpn. WATER SOLUBILITY: 443 mg/l at 25° C
