Spiromesifen controls spider mites at all stages of development though the adult females and teleiochrysalis stage (the quiescent phase prior to adult moult) are significantly less susceptible. There is a slight delay in onset of activity but pest control is faster than benzoyl phenyl ureas.

Spiromesifen is highly effective against whiteflies. Although its mode of action is unclear it seems to interfere with development and lipogenesis. The product is particularly active against juvenile stages. The ovicidal effect in mites is strong.

Laboratory studies showed no cross resistance with existing acaricides such as fenpyroximate, pyridaben, abamectin, clofentazine, hexythiazox, dicofol and organophosphates. Field trials confirmed the activity against T urticae on eggplants with spiromesifen performing at the level of the commercial reference, avermectin.

In field trials, spiromesifen controls the juvenile stages (instars 1-3) of sweet potato whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci, B argentifolii). Foliar applications cause loss of fecundity in adult insects. The US National Potato Council identified spiromesifen as a significant potential product in the Pacific Northwest where mite control is a major issue for growers and propargite is the only currently (2004) available miticide. Washington and Oregon have submitted requests for Section 18 approvals for bifenazate, but spiromesifen is the preferred option on the basis of efficacy.

Trials conducted worldwide under varying climatic conditions showed excellent residual control of different biotypes of Bemisia tabaciiin cotton. In early season cotton, spiromesifen is comparable to Zephyr and superior to Savey and Comite.

Trials in spring melons in Arizona showed that Oberon, applied alone or in combination with Admire (imidacloprid), provided good residual control of whitefly, comparable to Courier (thiamethoxam) or Applaud (buprofezin). The results indicate Oberon could provide melon growers with an alternative to Admire or a rotational partner for Courier or Capture.

Greenhouse studies showed that spiromesifen controls whitefly strains resistant to organophosphates, carbamates, pyrethroids, pyriproxyfen and endosulfan. Certain Spanish (Almeria) Q strains that are highly resistant to neonicotinoid products were found to be susceptible to spiromesifen. Both laboratory and field studies reveal that the product is safe on beneficial organisms suitable for IPM (Integrated Pest Management) practices.
