Activity
Pyraclostrobin (BAS 500 F) is a broad-spectrum fungicide, controlling major plant pathogens from the ascomycete, basidiomycete, deuteromycete and oomycete classes of fungi. The product has protective, curative, eradicative, translaminar and locosystemic properties.

Pyraclostrobin is taken up rapidly by the plant and is largely retained by the waxes in the leaf cuticle. It demonstrates good translaminar movement through the leaf, resulting in disease control on both leaf surfaces. Acropetal and basipetal transport in leaves and vapour phase activity is very limited. Microscopic studies revealed that preventative treatments at concentrations of less than 0.1 ppm inhibit spore germination of a wide range of pathogens. The rapid uptake by the leaf and subsequent retention in the cuticular waxes means that applications are rainfast within 2 hours.

After a curative or, against some diseases, an eradicative treatment, mycelium development is inhibited. Despite this post infection activity, the recommended use of pyraclostrobin will be preventative in accordance with the Fungicide Resistance Action Committee guidelines. The product is also reported to have beneficial effects on plant growth and yield and these are attributed to enhanced nitrate reductase activity leading to improved nitrogen assimilation during the stages of rapid crop growth (GS 31-39) and decreased ethylene production resulting in delayed senescence.

Pyraclostrobin offers good to excellent control of most cereal leaf and ear diseases. The product provides better curative activity than BASF's Opus (epoxiconazole) against wheat leaf blotch (Septoria tritici) and is also effective against wheat stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis), brown rust (P recondita), leaf blotch (Rhyncosporium secalis) and net blotch (Pyrenophora teres). The notable preventative activity against wheat leaf blotch is due to a high intrinsic activity on pycnidiospore germination and penetration.

In vines, pyraclostrobin provides effective control of downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) on the leaves and berries; the control is due to activity against several developmental stages of the pathogen. The zoospores are particularly sensitive and are lysed by contact with the fungicide. The product also controls Oidium, black rot (Guignardia bidwellii) and rot-brenner (Pseudopezicula tracheiphila) in vines.

The application interval ranges from 7 28 days depending on crop and target disease. Leaf diseases on cereals are controlled by applications made between Zadoks growth stages 39 and 45.

Cabrio is reported to provide excellent control against early blight on tomatoes, and against more diseases of cucurbits than any other product, whilst Headline alone controls nearly 50 diseases. Headline provides 'unprecedented' control of Ascochyta spp and anthracnose in pulse crops and is the only product, according to BASF, that combines superior control of early blight in potatoes with a reliable control of late blight.
