Activity
Bacillus licheniformis strain SB3086 acts by inhibiting fungal growth by producing antifungal agents and possibly an anti-fungal hydrolytic enzyme; the identities of these compounds have yet to be determined. It has both preventative and curative activity.

EcoGuard can be used alone and is most effective at low to moderate disease pressure. The company recommends applying the product in a programme as the first and third sprays once weather and turf conditions are conducive to disease onset, with a standard fungicide as the second spray. Research has shown that EcoGuard is most effective when used in a preventative disease control programme, with the result that fewer chemicals are used for mild to moderate infestations, reducing the risk of fungal resistance to products required for high disease pressure situations. EcoGuard can be applied at intervals of 14 days, shortening to 7 days when disease pressure increases. The company recommends using 20 fl oz per 1000 ft2 for optimum results.

The product can be used as part of an Integrated Pest Management programme and in resistance management. The company advises that whilst EcoGuard is compatible with most other fungicides, it should not be tank mixed with solutions containing strong acids, bases, oxidising agents or solvents.

The product also contains indole-3-butyric acid, a non-fungicidal plant growth regulating ingredient which improves the overall growth and health of turf. Studies at seven leading university turf centres and more than 30 US golf courses in the Northeast and Midwest have shown that turf treated with EcoGuard will recover more quickly from disease, with improved colour and increased density in damaged areas.

Environmental Profile

No adverse effects on the environment are expected as studies have shown that the levels of Bacillus licheniformis strain SB3086 will rise by no more than 1 to 2% above background when used at the rates stated. It has exhibited extremely low toxicity to animals, fish, birds, bees and other beneficial organisms.
