Chondrostereum purpureum

Activity
Chondrostereum purpureum spreads via airborne basidiospores, through which the organism penetrates the target tree via fresh wounds and extends widely through the xylem. The vessel occlusions and reduction in water supply that follow lead to decreased cell turgor and metabolic changes eventually resulting in cell death. When applied to freshly cut stems of susceptible deciduous woody species, C purpureum colonises the stump and inhibits sprouting and regrowth by triggering natural wood decay and decomposition processes. Levels of activity of C purpureum-based products vary amongst different seasons and target species, depending on their sprouting ability.

C purpureum releases phytotoxic compounds causing silverleaf disease. Sterpurenes and isozymes with endo-polygalacturonase activity are transported to the leaves where they induce leaf yellowing and cell wall degradation respectively. As the epidermis of the leaf is separated from the palisadic parenchyma, the gap between the layers is filled with air, causing an irregular reflection of light and the silvery appearance. Water stress, together with toxin action, lead to plant death in serious infections.

C purpureum action increases by 70-100% the efficiency of mechanical cutting operations used in forest management by reducing the increased density of stems which follows a mechanical cut.

Application is recommended during the growing season, from early spring to early fall as a thin layer of product over the surface area of stumps within 30 minutes of cutting.

Myco-Tech is under evaluation by Westwind Forest Stewardship, a non-profit organisation managing French-Severn public and crown forestry on behalf of the Government of Ontario, for control of unwanted deciduous broadleaf trees in a white pine forest. From 2002, Myco-Tech has also been used in daphne (D laureola) and ivy (Hedera helix) control and test sites have been secured by Myco-Forestis in the US with major industrial foresters such as Green Mountain Power in Vermont.

C purpureum isolate PFC 2139, the active component of Chontrol, showed excellent efficacy in red alder (Alnus rubra) control, achieving 100% stump mortality at two-year post treatment.

C purpureum products consist of unmodified viable cultures of the fungal mycelium incorporated into a biodegradable gel formulation that protects and nourishes the fungus.

Environmental Profile

Fate in :
Environmental levels of naturally occurring C purpureum will not increase significantly with the use of C purpureum products.
Non-target organisms will face minimally increased exposure to C. purpureum as a result of the use of C purpureum based mycoherbicidal products. Studies carried out to determine the susceptibility of non-target tree species to different C purpureum isolates showed the rate of mortality of coniferous and deciduous trees to be 1.4-1.7% and 2.5-76.7% respectively, in the worst case scenario.
