Activity
Metarhizium anisopliae ESC1 is primarily active against Dictyoptera, but it also controls insects of the orders Coleoptera, Heteroptera and Isoptera. It is a contact insecticide.

The fungus penetrates the cuticle and enters the haemolymph, causing the death of the insect. There is no oral activity; fungal spores pass intact through the insect gut. Individual termites die 7-10 days after infection. Infection is transmitted by direct contact (including grooming and oral and fecal feeding with infected insects); the effectiveness of the product is enhanced if the spray is applied to as many foraging termites as possible. These insects return to the colony and spread the active ingredient to others. EcoScience estimates that colonies may be controlled following primary infection of 10% of members. This (and the time taken to achieve control of the colony) is dependent on the species, size of the colony and the efficiency of applications. Bio-Blast can be applied with a crack/crevice tool, as a course fan spray or by injection into infested wood and remains active for 60-90 days following application.

EcoScience originally developed inoculation chambers (Bio-Path chambers) containing fungal spores for cockroach control. The company has also developed formulations (Bio-Blast) for application through conventional equipment for termite control. The company recommends using Bio-Blast in conjunction with baits or barrier products to control subterranean termites.
