ActivityProduction of aflatoxin in AF36 is blocked by a mutation in the gene for a polyketide synthase coding for a protein early in the synthetic pathway, essential for the formation of an aflatoxin precursor (Erlich & Cotty, 2004). It is, therefore, a truly atoxigenic strain.
AF36 is applied once a year, prebloom in late May or early June, to cotton fields on sterilised wheat seeds that have been coated with the mycelia of the fungus and dried. AF36 sporulates as the crop is irrigated; the spores then infect the cotton seeds, excluding infection by naturally occurring aflatoxin producing strains.
AF36 is not expected to exchange genetic material with the toxigenic A flavus strains due to its unique vegetative compatibility group.
Field trial results reported in Delta Farm Press showed that no farm in Pinal County, Texas had aflatoxin-free cottonseed prior to treatment with AF36. However, in the second year of treatment with AF36, 82% of fields had less than 20 ppb, and in the third year 86% of fields were below 20 ppb.
AF36 is reported to have a carryover effect from one season to the next. -

AF36 is not expected to be harmful to non-target organisms (plants and wildlife) based on avian infectivity/pathogenicity and honeybee data. There is also minimal risk to ground and surface water contamination.
