ActivityCandida oleophila strain I-182 is applied as a post-harvest drench, prior to waxing, and acts as a preventative treatment for storage rots. The product is therefore more effective on fresh wounds. The yeast colonizes fruit surfaces, thereby inhibiting the colonization by microbial pathogens.
The product can be used in association with low rates of conventional fungicides. C oleophila has been shown to remain viable when used with wax applications containing thiabendazole, imazalil, ridomil and hormones commonly used post-harvest treatments. Ecogen recommends using the product in combination with thiabendazole at 50-550 ppm. Treating citrus fruit with sodium ortho pheynylphenate (SOPP) or sodium hypochlorite, and then rinsing prior to product application, enhances the control of citrus diseases. Post-harvest disease on apples and pears is reduced if 1-2% CaCl2 is added to the treatment. Disease control is also improved if pome fruit is treated with sodium hypochlorite and rinsed prior to application of Aspire. -
