ActivityThe product protects the host by colonising the growing root tips of plants, competitively excluding fungal root pathogens, and acting as a mycoparasite of the pathogens. An additional mechanism is the production and secretion of anti-fungal metabolites, such as antibiotics. The mycoparasitic process involves colonisation of the pathogenic spores and vegetative mycelium and the subsequent lysis of these structures through the activity of enzymes such as chitinase.
The company states that this product can increase seedling vigour, strengthen root systems and increase yield by reducing weak/disabled plants; it is reported that the organism can chelate minerals which may explain this effect. Consistent use of this product is said to reduce or completely eliminate the need for chemical fungicides.
S lydicus is applied as a soil drench or soil mix and it is not applied directly to the growing crop. Residues from the product are not expected to be detectable on agricultural commodities. -
