Amicarbazone has both contact and soil activity. It is recommended for application pre-plant, pre-emergence, or post-emergence in maize to control annual broadleaf weeds and pre- or post-emergence in sugar cane to control annual broadleaf weeds and grasses. Amicarbazone is also suitable for use in no-till systems in maize. The product can be used as a burndown treatment for emerged weeds.

Pre-plant applications in maize can be made up to 30 days prior to planting (surface treatment) or 10 days prior to planting (incorporated into the soil).

Experiments conducted in Southwest Georgia (SWSS, 2001) to compare amicarbazone to cyanazine for crop injury and weed control when applied to cotton at the 35-40 cm post-directed stage showed that amicarbazone caused > 25% cotton injury. This result shows that amicarbazone, even though it provided >95% control of Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri) at 30 DAT, might not be suitable for post-directed weed control in cotton.

Further field studies conducted in Georgia in 2002 to test several glyphosate tank-mix combinations on cotton crops (SWSS, 2003) showed that amicarbazone plus glyphosate provided >95% control of Texas panicum and sicklepod at 7 and 30 DAT, >95% control of tall morning-glory at7 DAT. In yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus) the combination treatment outperformed (>90% control) the results obtained using glyphosate alone, while seed cotton yields did not differ between treatment groups.

Amicarbazone shows excellent selectivity in sugar cane (planted and ratoon); foliar uptake of the product is limited, allowing good flexibility in terms of application timings. The efficacy is better in rainy season than dry season cane crops.

A field trial carried out in 2001 by the US North Central Research Extension Centre showed that amicarbazone, applied pre-emergence at 5 - 7 ounces per acre, was selective to Cathay flax, seeded in a conventional tillage system, but provided little control of the redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus) or Kochia in the test plots.

In Brazil, Dinamic is labelled for the control of grasses and broadleaved weeds in maize and sugarcane. The spectrum of control includes Brachiaria decumbens, B plantaginea, Eleusine indica, Digitaria horizontalis, Cenchrus echinatus, Acanthospermum australe, A hispidum, Amaranthus spinosus, A viridis, Bidens pilosa, Portulaca oleracea, Commelina benghalensis, Sida rhombifolia, Ipomoea grandifolia and Emilia sonchifolia.
