Physical Properties

Acid itself not used directly. Commercial products usually sodium salt or mixed sodium + magnesium salts of dalapon. Sodium salt: yellowish, solid. Molecular weight:143.0; Physical form:Colourless liquid. Vapour pressure:0.01 mPa (20 °C); pKa:1.74-1.84, depending on the ionic strength of the solution.; Stability:Subject to hydrolysis; slight at 25 °C, but comparatively rapid 50 °C; so aqueous solutions should not be kept for any length of time. Alkali causes dehydrochlorination above 120 °C.

Toxicology

Sodium 2,2-dichloropropionic acid: (Rat): Oral LD₅₀ 9330 mg/kg (male); 7570 mg/kg (female). ADI:0.3 mg/kg.

Environmental Profile

Ecotoxicology:
Fish: LC₅₀ 105 ppm (bluegill). Bird: Dietary LC₅₀ >5000 ppm (mallard, ring-necked pheasant, Japanese quail).
Environmental fate: Animals:In mammals, following oral administration, dalapon is rapidly eliminated. In dogs, following a single oral dose of 500 mg, 65-70% is excreted within 2 hours.Soil:In soil, readily undergoes microbial degradation involving dechlorination and liberation of CO₂ (B. E. Day et al., Soil Sci., 1963, 95, 326). Plant:In plants, dalapon-sodium does not undergo significant degradation.
