Molecular weight:239.3. Physical form:Colourless crystals; ( tech., off-white solid). Density:1.17 (23.3 °C); Melting point:134.5-135.5 °C; ( tech., 132-134 °C); Vapour pressure:Negligible at 20 °C; Solubility:In water 260 mg/l (27 °C). Moderately soluble in polar organic solvents. In acetone 189, dimethylformamide 165, xylene 50 (all in g/l, 27 °C). Stability:Relatively resistant to degradation by u.v. light. Moderately stable to heat (some decomposition occurs at 210 °C). Decomposed by strong acids and alkalis.
Toxicology
Oral:Acute oral LD50 for rats 1050 mg/kg, mice 600 mg/kg, rabbits 1500 mg/kg, dogs 1000 mg/kg. Percutaneous:Acute percutaneous LD50 for rats >225 mg/kg. Non-irritating to skin and eyes (rabbits). Not a skin sensitiser (guinea pigs). Phytotoxicity:Phytotoxic to many crops, including cereals, maize, sorghum, sugar beet, beetroot, carrots, and spinach.

Ecotoxicology: 
Fish:Slightly toxic to fish.Bird: Very low toxicity. Bee: Very slightly toxic. 
Environmental fate: 
Animals:In mammals, following oral administration, N-demethylation occurs, followed by elimination as the O-glucuronide; p-hydroxylation is reported as a minor route of metabolism (R. E. McMahon & H. R. Sullivan, Biochem. Pharmacol.Soil:In soil, diphenamid undergoes microbial degradation. Persistence under warm damp conditions is c. 3-6 months.Plant:In plants, metabolism involves N-demethylation.
