Physical Properties

Molecular weight:183.9. Physical form:Colourless crystals (hexahydrate). Composition:DSMA forms a hexahydrate. Melting point:132-139 °C; Solubility:In water 279 g/ kg (anhydrous salt) (20 °C). Soluble in methanol, but practically insoluble in most organic solvents. Stability:Loses water at elevated temperatures. Hydrolysed to MSMA at pH 6-7. Decomposed by strong oxidising and reducing agents. DSMA 81SP*: White crystalline solid. Melting point 300°C. Dry DSMA (63SP)*: Hexahydrate is stable form in moist air. Solubility: 26 g/100 ml in methanol; 0.0025 g/100 ml in hexane.

Toxicology

Oral:Acute oral LD₅₀ for young albino rats 1800 mg/ kg. Percutaneous:Acute percutaneous LD₅₀ for rabbits 10 000 mg/kg. Mild irritant to skin and eyes (rabbits).
