Density:Bulk density, loose 0.358 g/cm3, packed 0.515 g/cm3; Melting point:154-155 °C; Vapour pressure:0.013 mPa (25 °C); Henry constant:3.57 × 10-4 Pa m3 mol-1 ( calc.); Partition coefficient(n-octanol and water):logP = 1.87 ( pH 7, 25 °C); Solubility:In water c. 12 mg/l ( pH 7, 25 °C). In methanol, chloroform, diethyl ether >10, ethyl acetate >5, hexane <0.5 (all in g/l).; Stability:Decomposes at 200-219 °C. Stable to hydrolysis at pH 3-9. Decomposed by u.v. irradiation, DT50 23 h in water.

Toxicology

Oral:Acute oral LD₅₀ for rats and mice >10 000, dogs >500, cats >250 mg/ kg. Percutaneous:Acute percutaneous LD₅₀ for rabbits >5000 mg/kg. Non-irritating to skin; moderate eye irritant (rabbits). Inhalation: LC₅₀ (4 h) for rats >4.12 mg/l air. Phytotoxicity:Cotton is the only crop which has been found to be tolerant.

Ecotoxicology:
Bees: LD₅₀ (oral) >362.6 μg/bee.Birds:Acute oral LD₅₀ for bobwhite quail >2000 mg/kg. Dietary LC₅₀ (8 d) for bobwhite quail and mallard ducks >5000 mg/ kg diet.Daphnia: LC₅₀ (48 h) 6.3 ppm.Fish: LC₅₀ (96 h) for rainbow trout 11.7, bluegill sunfish 14.3 mg/l.Worms: LC₅₀ (14 d) for earthworms >102.6 ppm.Other aquatic spp.: EC₅₀ (96 h) for pink shrimp 4.6, blue crab 34.0 ppm; (48 h) for oyster embryos 16.8 ppm.

Environmental fate:
Soil:Microbial degradation is the principal cause of disappearance from soil. In a silt loam, DT₅₀ >343 d ( pH 7.3, 2.6% o.m.). K_d 3-16, K_oc 350 Plant:Fluridone is not metabolised appreciably in terrestrial plants; see D. F. Berard et al., Weed Sci., 26, 252 (1978).
