Density:0.815 (-20 °C); 1.081-1.085 (25 °C, formalin); Melting point:-92 °C; Flash point:Flammable; Solubility:In water 55%. Miscible with acetone, alcohols, and ethers. Formalin miscible with water, acetone, ethanol.; Stability:Highly chemically-reactive. Polymerised in aqueous solution to trioxymethylene (retarded by the addition of methanol). Sensitive to light. Powerful reducing agent.;

Toxicology

Oral:Acute oral LD₅₀ for rats 550-800 mg/ kg (formalin). Percutaneous:Acute percutaneous LD₅₀ for rabbits 270 mg/ kg (formalin). Absorbed through the skin. Inhalation: LC₅₀ for rats (0.5 h) 0.82 mg/l, (4 h) 0.48 mg/l; for mice (4 h) 0.414 mg/l; formaldehyde vapour is very irritating to the mucous membranes and toxic to animals, including man. Phytotoxicity:Extremely phytotoxic.
