Molecular weight:309.5; Physical form:Crystalline powder. Composition:Chloralose also exists in a beta-form. Melting point:187 °C (beta-form 227-230 °C); Vapour pressure:Negligible at room temperature; Solubility:In water 4.44 g/l (15 °C). Soluble in alcohols, diethyl ether and glacial acetic acid. Sparingly soluble in chloroform. Practically insoluble in petroleum ether. The beta-form is less soluble than the alpha-form in water, ethanol, diethyl ether.; Stability:Converted by acids and alkalis into glucose and chloral.

Oral:Acute oral LD₅₀for rats 400 mg/kg, mice 32 mg/kg. ADI:(JMPR) 0.006 mg/kg b.w. [1987].

Environmental Profile

Ecotoxicology: Birds:Acute oral LD₅₀ for birds 32-178 mg/kg. Environmental fate: Animals:Chloralose is metabolised to chloral, oxidised to trichloroacetic acid, and reduced to trichloroethanol; the latter metabolite is responsible for the hypnotic effect of chloralose. WATER SOLUBILITY: 4.44 g/l at 15° C
