Activity
The activity of chitosan is to stimulate the natural defence response of treated plants. The active ingredient binds to fungal receptor sites, mimicking an attack by fungal spores. The activation of the receptor elicits responses that act to inhibit fungal infection. A primary response in treated plants is the reduction of the stomatal aperture. A further response is an increase in lignin biosynthesis and plant cell wall lignification, leading to stronger cell walls that are less penetrable by fungal pathogens. Chitosan also stimulates the production of phytoalexins, the anti-microbial compounds produced in plants.

The product is applied prior to the manifestation of disease.

The activity of chitosan has been evaluated for the control of Phytophthorainfestans on potatoes as part of a treatment regime.
