Toxicology

Oral:Acute oral LD₅₀ for rats >5000 mg/kg. Percutaneous:Acute percutaneous LD₅₀ for rabbits >2000 mg/kg, ((S)- isomer >5050 mg/kg). Non-irritating to eyes, moderately irritating ((S)- isomer slight Inhalation: LC₅₀ for rats >4.94 mg/l, ((S)- isomer >2.38 mg/l). ADI:( JMPR) 0.03 mg/kg b.w. [1994].

Algae: EC₅₀ (48-96 h) for Scenedesmus subspicatus 1.33 mg/ml.Bees:Non-toxic to adult bees; LD₅₀ (oral and topical) >1000 mg/bee. Bee larvae are sensitive at 0.2 mg/bee.Birds:Dietary LC₅₀ (8 d) for chickens >4640 mg/ kg.Daphnia: LC₅₀ (48 h) 360 mg/l.Fish: LC₅₀ (96 h) for bluegill sunfish 4.6, trout 4.4 mg/l.Other aquatic spp.:Toxic to aquatic Diptera.

Animals:In mammals, the secondary metabolite cholesterol has been identified.Soil:In soil, rapidly degraded, DT₅₀ c. 10 d.Plant:In plants, degradation principally involves ester hydrolysis, O-demethylation, and oxidative cleavage of the double bond at the 4-position. In alfalfa and rice, the principal metabolite is 7-methoxycitronellal.
